Once more with feeling: Oscar duo conquer New York
"Can you hear me okay?" asked the knowingly unmiced performer. The echoes of "No!" that rang from the audience didn't stop the Irish singer from launching into a spirited, unamplified rendition of "Say It To Me Now." The song grew from a modest whisper to a pleading scream that reached even the "cheap" seats.
From the outset last Monday, Hansard and his Czech-born partner Marketa Irglova, who won songwriting Oscars this year for the musical romance "Once," made a point of treating Radio City like a quaint club venue.
It was more than their charming pop melodies and quiet harmonies that helped create the intimacy. Throughout the set, the duo told endearing stories, invited friends and family members onstage for collaborations, changed the set list on a whim and led the audience in multiple sing-alongs. It may have been one of the biggest gigs (literally and figuratively) of their career, but the duo brought a palpable humility to the grandiose venue.
As expected, the set featured many songs from "Once," including crowd-favorites like "Lies," "When Your Mind's Made Up," their Oscar-winning ballad "Falling Slowly," and the audience-demanded novelty gem, "Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy."
The crowd was also treated to a lesser-known standouts, among them "Gold" (which featured a return appearance by the night's opening act, Interference) and several songs by the Frames (Hansard's other musical outfit). Irglova and her sister, who flew over from the Czech Republic for the show, performed a cover of Paul Giovanni's "Gently Johnny." But the evening's biggest applause was reserved for Hansard's raw, fiery rendition of Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks."
Still, it seemed the greatest awe was felt by the performers onstage, who often remarked on the surprising good fortune that had them headlining a venue that seemed almost out-of-reach when the pair made their New York debut in 2006.
"A couple years ago, we decided to kick our ball as hard as we could, and see how far it would go," Hansard said at one point during the show. "We were hoping it would reach the end of the garden, but we watched it go . . . across the street, over the next town, into a place we'd never even heard of before.
Alabama Sue Former Drummer
Country supergroup ALABAMA are suing their former drummer for the cash they overpaid him on their 2003 farewell tour.
Bandmates Randy Owen, Jeff Cook and Teddy Gentry claim Mark Herndon, who spent 25 years as the band's drummer for hire, owes them $200,000 (GBP100,000).
Ironically, Herndon recently asked his former bandmates for a $65,000 (GBP32,500) advance on sales from a live album Alabama recorded during the 2003 farewell tour, according to the Globe.
The Alabama trio reportedly reacted to his request by suing him for the $200,000 (GBP100,000) advance he got prior to the 2003 tour.
A source close to Herndon tells the Globe that the drummer is prepared to come forward with details that will ruin the Country Music Hall of Fame band's legacy if Owen, Cook and Gentry insist on taking their lawsuit further.
The insider says, "Mark kept his mouth shut tight when they were rocked by alleged extramarital affairs... and bad business deals.
"If they go ahead with this, he's going to let them have it."

After a series of EPs including Fire and Brimstone, Tattoos and Scally Caps, and Boys on the Docks, the Dropkick Murphys signed to Hellcat Records to egress their 1998 uncut Do or Die, produced by Rancid's Lars Frederiksen; McColgan exited the group before long after (he afterward went on to form the like-minded Street Dogs) and was replaced by vocalizer Al Barr for the reexamination, 1999's The Gang's All Here.
Ring Mentality, a stock split spill with the Business, appeared in mid-2000, only at the same time the band was going through and through an extensive redesign. Their five-piece organisation expanded into a septet, for Marc Orrell stepped in after original guitarist Rick Barton left the band to induce marital. Bassist Ken Casey took over, and the album, which featured collaborations with ex-Pogue Shane MacGowan and Cock Sparrer's Colin McFaull, was issued in former 2001.
Their Irish pride shone through the following year, when Live on St. Patrick's Day from Boston, MA was released in the summer. Recorded at the biggest Irish-American solemnization of the year in a town known for its far-flung Irish heritage, the set was a caustic deterrent example of their intense and lively gigs. As the band prepped for the annual Vans Warped Tour in summer 2003, they released Blackout in June; the album featured new bagpipe player Scruffy Wallace and accordionist Tim Brennan (world Health Organization farther took over mandolin and tin whistle later Foltz left next some touring). The Murphys reworked the Boston Red Sox anthem "Tessie" on their mid-2004 EP Tessie, which after became the idea birdcall to the Sox's World Series run that year. Warrior's Code followed in 2005, and one of its songs, "I'm Shipping Up to Boston," was later used in the 2006 Martin Scorsese film The Departed. Soon after, the band recorded The Meanest of Times, a accumulation of songs just about family trueness, featuring edgar Albert Guest appearances by Spider Stacy of the Pogues and Ronnie Drew of the Dubliners, released in mid-September 2007.
